Warm welcome to well-known Israeli composer  Semion Shifrin

No.108 – #2*   An interesting and difficult complex from reversal themes. (JV)

No.108.1 – #2*   Improved version of No.108 – Quoting author’s words: “All white pieces play in each solution, 7 mates by anti-batteries on the same square with different pieces!” (JV)

AMU: mate is possible only in the case, when mating piece is attacked by the opposite piece. If the piece is attacked twice, then it loses again the ability to give mate.

LEO(LE): Moves as Queen, but captures only by hopping over a hurdle to any square beyond.

PAO(PA): Moves as Rook, but captures only by hopping over a hurdle to any square beyond.

VAO(VA): Moves as Bishop, but captures only by hopping over a hurdle to any square beyond.

NAO(NA): Moves as Leo, but on Nightrider-lines instead of Queen-lines.

Nightrider(N): A Rider along a straight line on squares lying a Knight`s move away from each other.

Nice idea using the chinese pieces and the not so common AMU condition. I wish the six anti-battery mates on g3 were shown after the key also (rather than as setplay or threats) !!

  2. Semion Shifrin says:

    Dear seetharaman ,
    Thank you for your comment.
I thought about it, but if you do so,
how to decorate the other themes of the problem ?

  3. Seetharamanseetharaman says:

Well done Semion – you did it !! Nice thematic threat and defence!

I think the definition of AMU is slightly different from what is given above. The piece “making” the mating move is the one that should be attacked for the mate to happen. The mating piece Vao b8 is not relevant.

It is nice that the defence motive is to release the attack on Vao b6 so that it cannot complete the threat.
