No.228 – h#2 by Michael Grushko – Interesting neutral AUW with only 5 pieces! (JV)

Definitions:

Take & Make: Having captured, a unit must immediately, as part of its move, play a non-capturing move in imitation of the captured unit from the capture-square. If no such move is available, the capture is illegal. Promotion by capture occurs only when a pawn arrives on the promotion rank as the result of a take&make move. Checks are as in normal chess: after the notional capture of the checked K, the checking unit does not move away from the K’s square.

Couscous Circe: As Circe, but the captured piece reappears on the Circe rebirth square of the  capturing unit. Pawns reappearing on promotion squares are promoted instantly, at the choice of  their own side.

Circe: Captured units (not Ks) reappear on their game-array squares, of the same colour in the case of pieces, on the file of capture in the case of pawns, and on the promotion square of the file of capture in the case of fairy pieces. If the rebirth square is occupied the capture is normal.

Amazing problem! Neat use of Coucous Circe condition. Six promotions including AUW. Can anything better be done in two moves ?

Many thanks for the flattering dedication of this problem, another example of the remarkable possibilities of T&M in combination with neutral pawns and rebirth conditions, of which Couscous is probably the most interesting. Not just an AUW this time but an extra Q in each case, and all in the space of two moves! Perhaps a slight shame, though, that a nS is idle in one mate.

A small idea with R&B promotions:
White Kd4
Black Kh3
Neutral Pg7 Pe6 Pe2
H#2 (1+1+3)
b) wKd4 → g1
CouscousCirce

a) 1.nPe2-e1=nR nPg7-g8=nR 2.nRg8-g1 nRe1*e6 [+nPh1=nR] #
b) 1.nPe2-e1=nB nPg7-g8=nB 2.nBg8-f7 nBf7*e6 [+nPf1=nB] #

[a) with Circe, -nPe6
1.nPe2-e1=nR nPg7-g8=nR 2.nRe1-e5 Kd4*e5 [+nRh8] # ]
