No.250 – Geoff Foster – A nice four-men with “ANI”-solutions! (JV)

Definitions:

Locust (L): moves on Q-lines but only by capturing an enemy unit, arriving on the square immediately beyond that unit, which must be vacant.

No.250 Geoff Foster Australia original-10.02.2013   h#2,5*                                   (0+1+3n)(no white King)Locust a3     Solution: (click to show/hide)   Set-play: 1.Ke6 nSd6 2.Kf6 nLOxd6-e7# Real play: 1…nSe5 2.Kd4 nSd3 3.Kc3 nQxd3#   Very unusual “echo mates” with the Q and Locust 4 squares apart! In the set play the S must go to d6 to act as a hurdle, but in the real play it must go to d3 so that the King will be able to go to c3. In the set play S prevents 2.Ke5, while in the real play it prevents 2.Kc4. (Author)

1. Nikola Predrag says:

Clever use of nS to determine the unique play in the phases. In the set play, white Locust would be enough.

These echo mates are not unusual, at least to those who have analysed Julia’s No.249 – there they occure as cooks.

Geoff has written to me that this problem was inspired by mine No.249. Of course, analyzing a problem it is possible to get some idea either related to it, or in some cases quite opposite.
Myself I often get new ideas for the problems from my own cooks. Especially in case of Locust piece! And I consider such problems as originals. 🙂
I like this one by Geoff!
