No.349  by Vito Rallo – А nice Miniature with ideal mates and Chameleon-Circe fairy condition!  (JV)

Definition:

Chameleon Circe: When a piece is captured (King excluded, unless otherwise stated), it transforms according to the scheme Knight – Bishop – Rook – Queen – Knight…. (other pieces don’t transform), then it must be replaced on its rebirth square according to the Circe rules if it is empty, otherwise the captured unit vanishes.

Ideal mates look nice but the repeated rebirth of wBf1 shows that the fairy condition is a wasteful luxury. wB could be initially on f1:
White Kc5 Sh4 Bf1/Black Bd7 Ke6 Bf6
1.Ke5 Bd3 2.Be6 Sg6#; 1.Be8 Sg6 2.Bf7 Bh3#

A bit more of Chameleon-Circe would show a self-defending wB in one variation:
White Se5 Sg4 Kf2/Black Kf5 Pg5 Ph5
1.Kf4 Sg6+ 2.Kxg4 [+wBf1] Bh3# -> 3.Kxh3[+wRh1]-selfcheck
1.hxg4 [+wBf1] Bd3+ 2.Kf4 Sg6#

Two variations might well use Chameleon-Circe, with model mates:
White Be5 Sh5 Kf2/Black Kf5 Pg5 Pe4 Sf4
1.Sh5 [+wBf1] Bg3 2.Kg4 Bh3# -> 3.Kxh3[+wRh1]-selfcheck
1.Kxe5 [+wRa1] Rd1 2.Se6 Rd5# -> 3.Kxd5[+wQd1]-selfcheck
Both wS and wB show 3 Chameleon-phases in a miniature.

2. Vito Rallo says:

The latest variant is interesting but I propose the twin

8/8/8/4Bk1N/4pn2/8/5K2/8
b) Pe4->g5
a) 1.Sh5 [+wBf1] Bg3 2.Kg4 Bh3# -> 3.Kxh3[+wRh1]-selfcheck
b) 1.Kxe5 [+wRa1] Rd1 2.Se6 Rd5# -> 3.Kxd5[+wQd1]-selfcheck

3 Chameleon-phases in a miniature (3+3). Model Mates.

Well, it’s a matter of taste. 2 solutions are worth one extra bP. In case of 7 or 8 pieces, I would (generally speaking) prefere a miniature with a twin. 6 pcs with a twin and 7 pcs with 2 sol. look equally worth to me in this case.
