Definitions:

Grasshopper(G): Moves along Q-lines over another unit of either color to the square immediately beyond that unit. A capture may be made on arrival, but the hurdle is not affected.

Rookhopper: As Grasshopper, but moves on Rook lines only.

Bishophopper: As Grasshopper, but moves on Bishop lines only.

PAO(PA): Moves as Rook, but captures only by hopping over a hurdle to any square beyond.

VAO(VA): Moves as Bishop, but captures only by hopping over a hurdle to any square beyond.

    The solutions are in error, because they don’t indicate that 2.VAf4+, 3.VAd6+, 2.PAd3+ and 3.PAd6+ are checks.

    The final check in each part becomes the mate in the other part! I especially like the roles of the knights. In one part they parry a check, open a line for the final check and become a hurdle, while in the other part they are pinned in the mate. A complex and wonderfully rich work!

    The play and content are very nice but the most fascinating is the orthogonal-diagonal change between the phases achieved with the same pieces which all have a thematic role in both phases.
    Without a proper Duplex-example for a comparison, I can’t tell whether this is “only” a beautiful geometry or a complex strategical masterpiece.

    But again, there is a dubious interpretation of a short definition/description of a theme. The essence of some theme is not in the outer appearance but in the motivations and goals.
    The goal of Zilahi is not a sacrifice+some abstract mate, reciprocally by 2 pieces. The goal is to mate the same King, that is what tightly connects the two pieces-the same goal.

    The essence and the outer appearances or impressions should be differentiated. The themes Zilahi and Umnov are different than Zilahi-effect and Umnov-effect which only imitate the apperance of the themes.

        Of course, this problem is more complex than my old H#2..
        Winchloe lists following effects/themes:
        Zilahi, Batterie noire, Switchback blanc, Batterie blanche, Switchback noir, Déclouages réciproques, Switchback de pièce féerique, Quasi-sacrifice blanc, Mouvement Pelle, Sacrifice noir, Echecs croisés, Captures réciproques, Echo diagonal-orthogonal, Mat par clouage, Anderssen, Auto-clouage direct, Anderssen noir, Clouage direct, Batterie masquée, Déclouage indirect..
        But is 377.1 really an improvement..?
        I much prefer 377: positions of B/W Ss are more analogous.. and Gs, instead of R/B hoppers..!
        Very nice duplex matched sequence: A unpins B, B unpins A, switchback by A, self pin by C, line opening by A, Battery mate by B capturing A and pinning D..
        In the duplex line, exchange A/B, C/D..

        Yes, beautiful geometry used in a true duplex for showing ODT in the reciprocal strategical “unpin by the unpinned piece” (1st unpins are interferences on the same square).

        Fairy pieces and the additional 2 halfmoves in No.377 are skilfully used to enrich the complexity of content, by pinning new pieces (bS/wS) on d3/f4 which will serve as hurdles for “Chinese-captures”. Both Knights have to be pinned also on their initial squares in pin-mates.

        Benefit of hs# is a potential for perfect econommy. Both w/b Pawn-cages are needed in both phases of duplex.

    I’m glad that Nikola made his comment. To me the problem seems really excellent, so it’s good that somebody else thinks so. I agree that it is not a Zilahi, but that is not important.
