No.390 by Mario Parrinello – A very unique Miniature with exotic construction and play! (JV)

Definitions:

Grasshopper(G): Moves along Q-lines over another unit of either color to the square immediately beyond that unit. A capture may be made on arrival, but the hurdle is not affected.

Contra Grasshopper (CG): Moves like a G but in reverse: the hurdle must be adjacent to the CG, which may land anywhere on the line beyond.

LEO(LE): Moves as Queen, but captures only by hopping over a hurdle to any square beyond.

PAO(PA): Moves as Rook, but captures only by hopping over a hurdle to any square beyond.

NAO(NA): Moves along a straight line on squares lying a Knight’s move away from each other (as Nightrider), but captures only by hopping over a hurdle to any square beyond.

Royal Piece: Every piece that executes Royal function on the board. Every side can play with only one Royal piece when it doesn’t have its own King on the board.

One Response to No.390 (MP)

  1. Geoff Foster says:

It takes a lot of effort just to understand the solutions!

In the first solution 1…NAg1 must be played to stop 4.rCGc7xe5 (the bNAg1 guards e5, using the wLEf3 as a hurdle). Also 2.PAf8 is needed to stop 3…rGf4xf2 (the wPAf8 guards f2, also using the wLEf3 as a hurdle).

In the second solution 1…Nah1 must be played to stop 4.rCGf7xf5 (the bNAh1 guards f5, using the wPAg3 as a hurdle). Also 2.LEb8 is needed to stop 3…rCGf4xh2 (the wLEb8 guards h2, also using the wPAg3 as a hurdle).

In each solution one neutral G checks the black royal G, then the other neutral G mates the white royal CG.
