No.679 by Peter Harris – Paradoxal four-men Aristocrat with two quite different surprising mate-finals! (JV)

Definitions:

Royal piece: Piece that executes a function of the King on the board.

Sentinels: When a piece (Ks included but not pawns) moves, a pawn of the same colour appears on the vacated square unless that square is on the first or eighth ranks or there are 8 pawns of that colour on the board already.

Chameleon Chess: All pieces on the board which are displayed as orthodox Q, R, B, S, are Chameleons. A Pawn can promote only in Chameleon-pieces.

1. Kjell Widlert says:

Thank you for the dedication, Peter!

Part a) is just as expected: the royal rooks transform into weaker pieces that can more easily be mated and forced to mate, respectively, and only 2 of the 5 sentinel pawns are actually needed for the play to work.

But part b)!
Quite shockingly, both royal rooks must be transformed into powerful royal queens, and there is still a s#1 at the end (where 4 of the 5 sentinel pawns are essential). This ending is the great gag in the composition, of course.
