No.849 by N.Shankar Ram – A seldom combination of #4 with Maximummer! (JV)

Maximummer: Black must play the geometrically longest move or may choose from among longest moves of equal length, distances being measured from the center of each square. Diagonal and oblique distances are measured from the orthogonal coordinates by using Pythagora’s theorem (take the square root of the sum of the squares of the orthogonal distances). All other orthodox chess rules apply.

Grasshopper(G): Moves along Q-lines over another unit of either color to the square immediately beyond that unit. A capture may be made on arrival, but the hurdle is not affected.

  1. The same theme complex (extended Jacobs theme) as in Ludovit Lacny, PAT A MAT 1999, #4 with fairy pieces nightrider, grasshopper and queen+grasshopper. It has also found a way into FIDE Album 1998-2000 as G110.

In Lacny’s #4 the mechanism is based on serial unguard of 4 checks/,mates guarded by 4 black pieces – each guards 3 lines.

Here the mechanism is based on serial guarding of 4 bK flights by arrivals of hurdles duelling with wS who gives up one possible checkmate in each move. Definitely very interesting mechanism and very good lecture in the geometry of the board.

Unique white moves are forced by the black first move each of which block a flight square so that white need to take care of the other three only. I think Theme is not ‘Jacobs’. Rather it is “Provision by black, non-provision by white”. Sure it is a lesson is chessboard geometry.
