No.934, 935 by Sébastien Luce: No.934 – A minimal echo with a duo of Grasshoppers; No.935 – A four corners theme. (Author)

No.935.1 by Sébastien Luce & Paul Rãican – A new version to No.935: “All white units contributes to checkmate. Four corners theme (in No.935) is replaced with come-and-go path: a2-a3-f8-h8-f8-a3-a2.” (PR)

Definitions:

Symmetry Circe: As Circe except that the rebirth square for the captured unit is that which lies at an equal distance (in a straight line) beyond the midpoint of the board. Thus a capture on c4 produces a rebirth on f5, a capture on g1 produces a rebirth on b8, and so on. Strictly speaking there are of course other types of symmetry: this one is rotational. (Or from Fairings No.42: Captured units are reborn on the square which lies at an equal distance (in a straight line) beyond the midpoint of the board. If the rebirth square is occupied the capture is normal.)

Anti-Super Circe: On making a capture, any capturing unit (including the King) is reborn on any free field on the board without causing a self-check or a selfmate. Thus every move has two active parts: capturing component (capture of enemy piece) and rebirth (replacing) component. If the first or second component is not possible, the move is illegal. The captured unit disappears as in normal chess. Pawns (white, black, neutrals, half-neutrals) can be reborn on the first or eight row. When reborn on the first row (for Black) or the 8th row (for White), the promotion (as the second move’s part) is obligatory and the promoted unit is chosen by the capturing side. White reborn Pawns on 1st rank (black on 8th) have no power. Normal, orthodox rules for castling and en passant are in force with the following additional elements: castling is permitted with the reborn King or (plus) Rook, and en passant is possible in combination with the Pawn’s promotion as second component of the same capturing move.

Circe: Captured units (not Ks) reappear on their game-array squares, of the same colour in the case of pieces, on the file of capture in the case of pawns, and on the promotion square of the file of capture in the case of fairy pieces. If the rebirth square is occupied the capture is normal.

PWC: When a capture is made, the captured unit (except a King) is replaced on the square the capturing unit just leaves. A Pawn is immovable on its 1st rank.

Einstein chess: All units (Ks excluded) change their type when they move, according to a precise pattern. For non-capture moves: Q>R, R>B, B>S, S>P, P remains P. For capture-moves: R>Q, B>R, S>B, P>S, Qremains Q.

Grasshopper(G): Moves along Q-lines over another unit of either color to the square immediately beyond that unit. A capture may be made on arrival, but the hurdle is not affected.

  1. Paul Rãican says:

In 935, wPa8 is useless in final position. So, I made a version:
    w: Kg6 Pa3 Pf8
    b: Ke8 Ra2 Pb7 Pe2
    (3+4) ser-h#13 Einstein PWC C+(Popeye & WinChloe)
    1.Ra2*a3=Q[+wPa2] 2.Qa3*f8[+wPa3] 3.Qf8-h8=R 4.0-0=B 5.Bf8*a3=R[+wPf8] 6.Ra3*a2=Q[+wPa3] 7.Qa2-a1=R 8.Ra1*a3=Q[+wPa1] 9.Qa3-e7=R 10.Re7-g7=B 11.Bg7*f8=R[+wPg7] 12.Rf8-f6=B 13.Bf6*a1=R[+wPf6] f6-f7 #
Here, all white units contributes to checkmate. Four corners theme is replaced with come-and-go path: a2-a3-f8-h8-f8-a3-a2.

  2. Luce Sebastien says:

    Dear Paul,
you pointed rightly a light weakness of my problem.
I wanted absolutely to realize the fours corners, but there are other examples in Winchloe database (without castling). Your version loses the theme but the solution is more “mysterious” and of course it is more economical.
If you like, and if Julia is agree, I would be glad to publish it as 935.1 S.Luce & P.Raican

Julia always appreciates any improvements to publish!

  4. Petko A.Petkovpetko petkov says:

Is right Anti – Super-Circe but not Super Anti-Circe ( I am the inventor of this condition – first publication: Feenschach, 2003, Heft 151; than second publication in Strate Gems, №28, 2004, etc. ). I ask for correction.
By the by, false is also the definition of Anti-Super – Circe in FIDE-ALBUM 2007-2009 because there are not “rebirth-squares” in Anti-Super-Circe. This feature and many other features are well explained in my cited articles in 2003 and 2004.

    • JuliaJulia says:

Sorry, corrected to Anti-Super Circe. (In the last Popeye’s versions this condition can be added either in a traditional way as “AntiSuperCirce”, or as “AntiCirce” condition with an option “Super”)
