Nicely presentated unique choice of first white move (1…Qh8 2.Qh6?; 1…Rd8 2.Rg6?). Wrong choice would allow Black to block the respective rebirth of a white checking piece.

In one phase there’s even a deeper thematic layer
1…Rd8 2.Rg6? Qa5 3.Qg5+ Rd1+! 4.Qd8!?
where the check/mate to White is uniquely parried by blocking the rebirth of bQ.

So, for instance, bRa6 instead of bSa7 would add such a layer also to the other phase
1…Qh8 2.Qh6? Rb5 3.Rg5+ Qa1+! 4.Qh8!?

Why is Kd6 not a refutation of the try, making the try useless anyway?

Joost, the try should be written as in my previous post, as a wrong choice of first white move.
