I see the Norsk problem gets in the AUW across the two solutions. Its first solution was harder to find. This, because the bK key, to my surprise, headed for middle of board!

No.770: Each mate involves a nP that gives check when the board is turned. In the first solution the nPg5 actually checks the wK until the board is turned! In the second solution the wK seems to move into self-check, but then the board is turned and it is Black who is mated! This is a single-check mate, but the nPb4 prevents Black from moving the nPb5. The R and B promotions are very cleverly done. The condition is very interesting, but I got tired of continually rotating the board!

N°770 : Yes Geoff, this condition is very interesting !
You have to try but you need Winchloe !
With this program you can see the rotations with the animation mode ! Julia told me that she is working to do the same on Julia’s Fairies…

770: An amazing amount of varied and specific (and, of course, orignal) play from just two kings and three pawns. And an AUW+1 sneaked in, too 🙂

Nils Bakke used to do problems with Norsk Chess..
Very convenient condition for Babson like tasks.. like madrasi..! 😉
