Very nice. I suppose it is the Salazar theme doubled. Happy to see a direct mate from Julia! First? 🙂

Thank you, Ram! No, it’s not Salazar, and not the first my direct mate too. Have already had several tries 🙂 this year, and this one could be just some better try, but thanks to Marjan is turned into the real problem. Very happy about it!

Yes, there are four exchange themes possible.

      Mate-mate exchange (simple exchange)
      Threat-mate exchange (Le Grand)
Key-mate exchange (Salazar or Reversal 1)
      Key-threat exchange (Reversal 2)

As usually, there is quite a serious misunderstanding about even a most basic terms here. To avoid too opening too much point, I’d like to concentrate only on the line “Key-mate exchange (Salazar or Reversal 1)”.

I think it is preferable to stick to the more restrictive and descriptive name Reversal 1. The reason is that name “Salazar” is used for at least three non-equivalent themes, all contained in the “prototype” twomove by Francisco Salazar. You can find the problem in the Encyclopedia of Chess Problems, here is the YACPDB reference:

Themes I have heard to be named Salazar until now:
        1. Formal theme 1.A, 1…a 2.B#, 1.B, 1…a 2.A# – that’s Reversal (I)
        2. Strategical theme – emphasis on motivational content: Two phases of #2 are related by keys and mates: in one phase white piece comes and creates direct battery that later fires checkmate. In the other phase “front” piece leaves the line in the key and later the checkmate is given using the line open in anticipation.
        3. Strategical theme – emphasis on the form of checkmates: The nature of mates after two black defences is exchanged in two phases: direct become indirect and vice versa. The final positions are the same. (cited from Encyclopedia p. 385)

Note that the third “theme” requires two defences and as such is quite different to the first one. Hey, that’s the terminology mess!

Ah…. you are right. I see another no-1013. But are there others too? 🙂
