No.863 by N.Shankar Ram – Surprising thematic captures of the black Pawns! (JV)

Definitions:

Take & Make: Having captured, a unit must immediately, as part of its move, play a non-capturing move in imitation of the captured unit from the capture-square. If no such move is available, the capture is illegal. Promotion by capture occurs only when a pawn arrives on the promotion rank as the result of a take&make move. Checks are as in normal chess: after the notional capture of the checked K, the checking unit does not move away from the King’s square.

Beautiful problem. It’s amazing that there are no cooks. Nice problem for solving too.

I think this is his first original composed after that long break. The other two problems published here (including the latest first prize winner of Juliafairies) are I learnt are completion of unfinished old schemes from his file! Welcome back Shankar with another cyclic delight!

This is a very good interpretation of Shankar’s idea avoiding the weak twinning ! Brilliant!

The “interpretation of Shankar’s idea” is almost 10 years old :).

It was composed in Andernach when T&M was introduced. I initially composed a proofgame with only the bishop capturing all pawns. Dirk cooked it by using the knight, and together we came up with this one, combining both my solution and Dirk’s cook.

You are right. It is your idea which Shankar has interpreted differently ! 🙂

Looks like it..!
Conceiving the same idea in 2 solutions of a proof game and getting a sound position is really astonishing. Congratulations, Joost and Dirk!

Both problems are well done. Everyone is with its own.
I think ideas are free. In other respect for example
every “Indian” after Loveday would be anticipated.
