No.172 – hs#3 by Julia Vysotska – This problem is my “dream of the week”! I like riders, and what I wanted this time was to compose hs# problem with a pair MAO & MOA. Before I’ve used them in h# only. But was sure that something interesting should be possible in hs# as well. After days of failed searches I was so much happy when finally have found this scheme and couldn’t think about anything also until have came to this C+ problem! There’re still some minor things I’d like to be different, but I don’t see any possibility to change. Anyway, I simply love this problem!
Also, I’ve looked in Echecs database and there’re no hs# problem with the both chinese riders and just 5 of them have only MAO. I don’t think that this is the first problem with them both, for sure in some other databases some others can be found, but still I believe it is quite unique. (JV)
Definitions:
MAO(MA): the Chinese knight, which is a Rider, moving along a bent line to the arrival square of a normal Knight, first orthogonally then diagonally. The Mao can be interfered with on the intervening square.
MOA(MO): the Chinese knight, which is a Rider, moving along a bent line to the arrival square of a normal Knight, first diagonally then orthogonally. The MOA can be interfered with on the intervening square.
Lion(Li): Moves along Q-lines over another unit of either color to any square beyond that unit. A capture may be made on arrival, but the hurdle is not affected.

Beautiful problem with battery formations and pinning effects!
I wish that it was possible to pin the checking WQ in the mate rather than the MAO/MOA.
