No.387, 388 by Michael Grushko – Two miniatures seem almost identical, but still have quite different solutions! (JV)
Definitions:
Couscous Circe: As Circe, but the captured piece reappears on the Circe rebirth square of the capturing unit. Pawns reappearing on promotion squares are promoted instantly, at the choice of their own side.
Einstein chess: all units (Ks excluded) change their type when they move, according to a precise pattern. For non-capture moves: Q>R, R>B, B>S, S>P, P remains P. For capture-moves: R>Q, B>R, S>B, P>S, Qremains Q.
Republican Chess (Type 2): There are no Kings : if the side which has played can put the opposite King on a square where it would be legally mate, then the opposite King is put on such a square. The opposite side can then put itself the other King on a square where it is mated.
Andernach Chess: A piece (excluding King) changes its color after any capturing move. Rooks on a1, h1, a8 and h8 can be used for castling, provided the usual other rules for that move are satisfied.

N.387: The checkmate is specific: 8.Kxb4(Be1)? selfcheck, Rxb4=bQ [bBd1]? selfcheck. This is the good side, but I expect from this kind of problems two or three phases. Must say that in Einstein rules (an invention of Jean Zeller -27-07-1909 -03-01-2002- French composer) the promotion is forbidden.
