No.392 by S. K. Balasubramanian – Surprising mates after “flights” of the white King! My gratitude to the author for the dedication! (JV)
No.392.1 by S. K. Balasubramanian – Author’s improvement to No.392. Enjoy! (JV)
Definitions:
Take & Make: Having captured, a unit must immediately, as part of its move, play a non-capturing move in imitation of the captured unit from the capture-square. If no such move is available, the capture is illegal. Promotion by capture occurs only when a pawn arrives on the promotion rank as the result of a take&make move. Checks are as in normal chess: after the notional capture of the checked K, the checking unit does not move away from the K’s square.
Locust (L): moves on Q-lines but only by capturing an enemy unit, arriving on the square immediately beyond that unit, which must be vacant.

As the WK squares are guarded only on the mating moves, the initial WK moves are a real surprise. Well done Bala!
Dear Seetharaman,
Thanks for your comments,
I was actually trying for a more complex version as given below:
Wh: Kh6 Be7 Rh7 Sd5 Pa6 Pa7
Bl: Ka8 Rf4 Rg7Bc7 Sg5 Lh1
HS#3 Intended solutions:
1.Be7xg5-f3 Rf4-f8 2.Kh6xg7-g4 Lh1xh7-h4+ 3.Sd5xc7-f4+ Rf8xf4-d5#
1.Be7xg5-e4 Bc7-e5 2.Kh6xg7-e7 Lh1xh7-d8+ 3.Sd5xf4-f6+ Be5xf6-d5#
Probably I was over ambitious and it had many cooks. After a hard try I could manage to improve 392 partially.

Is move 1. – Bf6-f8 really possible in the diagram position?
3… Bd8xf6-d5 # reveals what is the correct 1st black move
No.392.1 – corrected 1…Bf6-d8. Thank you!
Mr. Vlaicu Crisan suggested that wPa6 & wPb3 can be replaced with a bPa4 in both 392 & b392.1. (ofcourse, In 392, bPg3 can also be removed with this correction) Thanks Vlaicu.
Ms.Julia, is it possible to publish the corrected version of 392.1?
— Bala
wPb3 replaced with a bPa4 on the diagram 392.1 ! Everything is possible, you’re welcome!
It’s amusing half-communication. Why did Vlaicu suggest bPa4 instead wPb3? Probably because this change eliminates the cooks when in the first versions the superfluous wPa6 is removed from the board.
Julia,
Probably you missed that I had mentioned about replacing both wPa6 and wPb3 with a single bPa4. This is what Vlaicu suggested to me. I will be thankful if you can make the appropriate correction in P392.1
— Bala
Vlaicu suggested the improvement, because I had requested him personally (through personal communication) to comment on this problem for which he responded through my personal email. So, when I mentioned about this I thought it is my moral duty to thank him for this.
wPa6 removed! sorry!
Thanks Julia for the correction.
