Definitions:
PAO (PA): (0,1) Chinese. Chinese piece operating along Rook lines: moves as Rook, but captures only by hopping over a hurdle to any square beyond.
VAO (VA): (1,1) Chinese. Chinese piece operating along Bishop lines: moves as Bishop, but captures only by hopping over a hurdle to any square beyond.

Typical Michel. But if a man had shouted out loud “Bravo!” at each of his excellent composition so would very nearly destroyed their own vocal cords.
Some matter for thought.
Neutral pieces which are used as obstructions for mating piece are directed at the squares around the black king. It is possible to change the problem so that white squares around king will be guarded with these neutral pieces, rather then simply blocked and so these “semi-white” pieces will take active role in the mate.
I would say it is not been worthy if there is a clear goal in play, that is, only the obstructions. Unfortunately, there are some additional effects of removal of hindering black pieces and that is why I am not sure which approach is better.
