No.845, 846 by Michael Grushko – Complicated solutions with combinations of fairy conditions in Michael‘s style. Author dedicates the both problems to the 1st RIGA BLACK BALSAM TT with a comment that the first problem is a half-black balsam and the second one is an opened bottle of the black balsam with a white cork :). Thank you, Michael! (JV)
Definitions:
Einstein Chess: All units (Ks excluded) change their type when they move, according to a precise pattern. For non-capture moves: Q>R, R>B, B>S, S>P, P remains P. For capture-moves: R>Q, B>R, S>B, P>S, Qremains Q.
Parrain Circe: After a capture, the captured piece is reborn only after another piece of its own side has moved. The line between capturing square and rebirth square is parallel with and of same direction and length as the move of this other piece. Pawns can be reborn on 1st and 8th rank. From their own base rank, they may move one-step; if reborn on the promotion rank, the Pawn at once promotes, the promotion piece being determined by the Pawn side.
Republican Chess (Type 2): There are no Kings : if the side which has played can put the opposite King on a square where it would be legally mate, then the opposite King is put on such a square. The opposite side can then put itself the other King on a square where it is mated.
Half-neutral piece: It can exist in black, white or neutral state. A piece in the neutral state may be moved by Black or White, after which it changes into black or white state respectively. A piece in the black state may be moved only by Black, after which it changes into its neutral state, and similarly for White. By the notation: “h” = half-neutral piece, states are marked with “w”(white), “b”(black) and “n”(neutral). Castling is possible with orthodox (or Circe- reborn) Rooks and half-neutral King (in white phase by white castling and in black phase by black castling). After such castling move, the Kings becomes half-neutral, and could be checked or even mated. This is a special rule for the half-neutrals.
Maximummer: Black must play the geometrically longest move or may choose from among longest moves of equal length, distances being measured from the center of each square. Diagonal and oblique distances are measured from the orthogonal coordinates by using Pythagora’s theorem (take the square root of the sum of the squares of the orthogonal distances). All other orthodox chess rules apply.
Double Grasshopper (DG): Makes a Grasshopper move without capturing, then a 2nd Grasshopper move. Grasshopper: Moves along Q-lines over another unit of either color to the square immediately beyond that unit. A capture may be made on arrival, but the hurdle is not affected.

846. One cannot be faulted for arguing that ‘a2-c4-c2’ is longer than ‘a4-c4-c2’ :). Obviously the starting-landing sqaure (not the route) is the criterion.
