Warm welcome to the well-known English author, Chris Feather, in this section!  I couldn’t say that this is a new name on the site, as I have already had the pleasure of presenting to you Fairings-issues by Chris and his famous book “Black to play“. I believe that everyone will agree that Chris is an exceptionally interesting and knowledgeable person, with a deep understanding of things from so different fields, with a clear style of writing, humanity, and with his compositions, of course! So, I’m very happy to show you an original problem by Chris here!

No.157 – h#3 by Chris Feather  Interesting four-men duplex with neutral AUW! (JV)

Definitions:

Take & Make: Having captured, a unit must immediately, as part of its move, play a non-capturing move in imitation of the captured unit from the capture-square. If no such move is available, the capture is illegal. Promotion by capture occurs only when a pawn arrives on the promotion rank as the result of a take&make move. Checks are as in normal chess: after the notional capture of the checked K, the checking unit does not move away from the K’s square.

PWC – When a capture is made, the captured unit (except a King) is replaced on the square the capturing unit just leaves. A Pawn is immovable on its 1st rank.

So much complexity, with so few pieces and in so few moves — wow !! One of the best originals published here.

Wow. By the way, thanks to Julia for making CJF’s “Black to Play” available for reading on her website. It is probably at once an intellectual tour-de-force, a idiosyncratically funny, and masterful survey by a veteran of that art, the helpmate. The best book I have read, and I am counting all the Christmas series of ACWhite, as well as Adventures in Composition by Mansfield.

I agree Mr.Ramesh.
Thanks also to Mr.Feather who agreed to make it available free and Mr.McDowel who spent his time and energy to prepare the fresh copy formatted for internet use.
