Welcome to new author, from AustraliaLinden Lyons! I’d like to mention that Linden is young composer, who has started composing fairies, and his start and maybe his favorite piece for now is Grasshopper. Some problems by Linden are shown in the article by Geoff Foster in The Problemist Supplement, March-2012 – “A Path For The Young Composer“.

No.182 – #2 by Linden Lyons – A rare case when we have fairy #2 here! (JV)

Definition:

Grasshopper(G): Moves along Q-lines over another unit of either color to the square immediately beyond that unit. A capture may be made on arrival, but the hurdle is not affected.

Nice problem. Welcome to an obviously talented composer. In a slightly different scheme I think the King tries can be converted as second move continuations of a three-mover. The black rook moves can be obstructions (for example, the move 1….Rf6 now prevents the check 2….Gh4+). Just a thought, I am not sure if a workable scheme can be found.

Hi Seetharaman. Thanks for your kind words. I’m intrigued by your idea that this problem can be converted into a three-mover. I’ve never composed a three-mover, so I’d be interested if you’ve any further insights.

Will be happy to give more specific suggestions. Of course what will be used will be only the tries-portion defeated by black checks. So the final result and the required scheme will have to be different. Please send me a mail so that I can send you one or two specific examples and perhaps a scheme (see problem no.166 for my contact info).

The idea of 1…Rf6 2.Sd4# is very similar to the theme B1 (aka Somov theme) with the only difference that it is arrival effect of the black defense what makes flight to e5 impossible. In which sense it resembles the theme B2. So “theme B1½” maybe? 🙂

This effect is well known and most usually is characterized as hopper-specific form of B1. I do not know who has first used it (I guess Dawson), but for the first time I have met it in the more general form as theme of 7th TT Harmonie C 31.8.1994 that had asked for hopper-specific line combinations. A few other examples:
3+3 such variations (changed)
the solution shows both forms: usual and hopper
threemover with more complicated line strategy

Thanks, Juraj! In hindsight, it just had to be well known.
Very nice problems of yours. I most like the one from the 7th TT Harmonie.
