pieces | 'BUL PAO', 'BUL VAO', 'BUL Lion', 'Chinese (m,n) (family)', 'Lion (m,n) (family)' | фигуры |
BUL Lion: | Moves like a Lion ((0,1)+(1,1)Prolonged Hopper), but the hurdle must also make a non-capturing Lion move (the move is impossible if it cannot).
BUL PAO: | Moves like a Pao ((0,1)Chinese), but the hurdle must also make a non-capturing Pao move (the move is impossible if it cannot).
BUL VAO: | Moves like a Vao ((1,1)Chinese), but the hurdle must also make a non-capturing Vao move (the move is impossible if it cannot).
Chinese (m,n) (family): | Without capture moves like (m,n) Rider, with capture – like (m,n) Lion. | Китайская фигура (m,n). Без взятия ходит как Линейная фигура (m,n), со взятием – как Лев (m,n). |
Lion (m,n) (family): | Moves along lines of (m,n) Rider over another unit of either color to any square beyond that unit. A capture may be made on arrival, but the hurdle is not affected. | Лев (m,n) (семейство). Ходит по линиям Линейной фигуры (m,n), останавливаясь на любом поле после первого препятствия на этой линии. Фигура на поле прибытия может быть побита, фигура-препятствие остается незатронутой. |

Probably this is one the first examples using Bulgarian pieces of the very difficult "Avant-Garde Indian theme" invented by Petko Petkov.
The black batteries Be6-LIf5 and Rd3-LIe3 are translated on the same lines Bc8-LId7 and Ra3-LIb3 before firing.
From a merely strategic perspective, the rest of the play contains also some interesting aspects: three duos exchanging roles, Black-White Follow-My-Leader with black active sacrifice, diagonal-orthogonal correspondence, double check vs double check.
From the fairy specificity point of view, 5 out of 6 moves are "danced" by the Bulgarian pieces, with lots of interplay effects.
The white pawn g7 ensures the soundness of the second solution - without it, there is no solution: 3... LI:e6(VAf7) 4.LIg7(VAb3)!! and the bLIf5 has no longer a hurdle!
PAP’s example.
Thomas Maeder has programmed Popeye for BUL pieces, and there is a unique cook:
1.bLId5-h1[wPg2->c2] bLIf5-b1[wPc2->f2] 2.Kh3-g4 bLIe3-g1[wPf2->f8=LI] 3.LIf8-a3 + bLIg1*g7/-g6/-g5[wKg4->a4] #
Can it be that you used an intermediate version, Joost?
If you look at the feature request issue for Bul pieces on Github, you’ll see that there was a short discussion about promotion into Bul and not-Bul pieces.
In the current state of the implementation, Popeye doesn’t produce this cook any more.
You’re right, I used an older version.
For me this means that bul piece isn’t a piece with the bul attribute, but a separate piece. The documentation would probably be clearer if bul (and hurdle colour changing) are in a different category than e.g. magic, e.g. attributes (which don’t change the piece class, so promotion would be possible to the original piece) and type (which changes the piece class, so promotion would only be possible to the piece including the class).
