No.401 by Franz Pachl – Very interesting and difficult strategy in 3 phases! (JV)
Definitions:
Rose (RO): (1,2) Octagonal Rider (extents the move of the Knight on a circular path e.g. a4-b6-d7-f6-g4-f2-d1-b2 or a4-c5-e4-f2).
Camel (CA): (1,3) Leaper
Zebra (ZE): (2,3) Leaper
Take & Make: Having captured, a unit must immediately, as part of its move, play a non-capturing move in imitation of the captured unit from the capture-square. If no such move is available, the capture is illegal. Promotion by capture occurs only when a pawn arrives on the promotion rank as the result of a take&make move. Checks are as in normal chess: after the notional capture of the checked K, the checking unit does not move away from the K’s square.

Very rich thematic complex and nice play which is typical for the author! The black self-blocks and square vacation moves determines which neutral piece should create the “Rose” battery which is combined with open of line and bR sacrifices. Excellent!
The self-blocks alone are enough to determine which piece should unpin Rd3 to prepare a battery. That all mates use squares vacated in B1 is more of a lucky coincidence (or actually clever construction). Note that after 1.CAg4, both 2.- nZxd7-d1+ and 2.- nZxd1-d7+ fail to 3.nZb4! Note also that after 1.Sf3, other thematic pieces stop Camel mates on c3 and e7. Quite a complex mechanism.
