No.573 by Dominique Forlot – The mystery of the “underworld” with detailed comments by author about Memory Circe and A unit in memory! (JV)
Definitions sent by author:
Ghost Chess: When a capture is made, the captured unit (except a King) is reborn on the square where it has been captured as soon as that square is empty, and cannot be captured any more.
Memory Circe: Any capture triggers the rebirth of the piece previously captured, on the same square where its capture occurred (if it is not occupied), regardless the color or the type of the unit just captured. The reborn piece resumes its normal course. If the square where the capture occurred is occupied, then the captured unit is annihilated.
Unit(s) in memory: In this two conditions a unit, or more, can exist in memory before the actual position! This (these) unit(s) is (are) the piece(s) captured before the diagram position. In case of Ghost Chess this unit is under a piece upon chessboard square, waiting the liberation of its square. In case of Memory Circe this unit can be anywhere on the board, waiting a new capture to rebirth.

The main idea is the use of a piece in memory (a black pawn here) with two fairies conditions in the form of twins:
a) Ghost chess; b) Memory circe. (Author)

Author’s comments about “underworld” pieces in Popeye: (click to show/hide)
The new version of Popeye 4.67 allows the following extension (py-engl.txt file):
“If a piece is placed on an occupied square, the previous piece is transfered below the square to the top of the underworld. In the fairy conditions Circe Volcanic, Circe Parachute, GhostChess and HauntedChess, moves from that square cause pieces from the underworld to be transfered back into the real world. Otherwise, pieces in the underworld allow promoting pawns into their walk.”
We just have to imagine how to fill correctly this “underworld” where are waiting ghosts and frosts pieces.
Here is the specification for my problem:
BeginProblem
Stipulation h#3.5
Option Variation NoBoard
Condition GhostChess
Pieces
white Sf5 Ka1
black Pe6 Ke8 Rh5
black uncapturable Pe7
white Be7
EndProblem
Now , when you “run” Popeye you can see the effect of this underworld.
The first line of the solution informs us that the pawn e7 goes to the underworld (good job for the Popeye’s Team, really )
Popeye Windows-32Bit v4.67 (512 MB)
e7 already occupied – old piece goes to the underworld.
1…Be7-f6[+buPe7] 2.Ke8-f8 Bf6-h8 3.Rh5*h8 Sf5-d6 4.Rh8-g8[+wuBh8] uBh8-g7 #
solution finished. Time = 5.896 s
To summarize:
a) We place all the pieces except the bishop e7. (as a standard problem)
b) Then we put an black pawn ( uncapturable because of ghost-chess condition ) on e7
c) And, only now , we put a white bishop on e7 … the pawn e7 is automatically pushed on the underworld. (D.F.)
