No.681, 682, 683, 684 by Kostěj Šoulivý – Four-men Patrol quartet with author’s introduction to the problems! (JV)

Definitions:

Patrol Chess: A piece can capture or give check only if it is observed by a piece of its own side.

Grasshopper(G): Moves along Q-lines over another unit of either color to the square immediately beyond that unit. A capture may be made on arrival, but the hurdle is not affected.

Camel(CA): (1,3) Leaper.

Empress(Em): Combines Rook and Knight (R+S).

Princess(PR): Combines Bishop and Knight (B + S).

Gnu(GN): Knight+Camel. Can move like a (1,2) Leaper and like (1,3) Leaper.

Patrol echoes

After my experiments with echoes in supercirce1 I tried to use another fairy condition – patrol chess. I checked similar pattern, which can be applied for orthogonal or diagonal version. All variations use some strong white piece standing on the neighbour square of the black king. This checking piece is guarded by neutral grasshopper over another neutral piece – on the straight line directed to the black king – which guards remaining king’s squares. This hurdle cannot move away, because in this moment checking piece begins to guard the grasshopper, resulting in the illegal check.

Orthogonal version with white queen illustrates this theoretical description. On dia1, fourfold echo is achieved, but in symmetric position. White queen is guarded by neutral grasshopper, so she checks, and simultaneously covers neutral camel, which guards two diagonal king’s squares. Neutral grasshopper is not guarded, so it cannot capture white queen, and after move CA~ it would acquire guarding by white queen with (illegal) check. Dia2 uses the same material with threefold echo without repetition of any move and with switchback of white queen in the first solution. In both cases distance between neutral grasshopper and black king is the same and thus echo is exact, but of course neutral grasshopper can be on other squares of the thematic line as well. Another material constellation with orthogonal mate dia3 uses white empress – remaining neutral piece has to guard two orthogonal squares of the black king and so white knight can be used.

The best problem with diagonal variation uses another combined piece, white princess. In such case, four squares around black king have to be guarded, but white gnu carries them all. The result dia4 shows again threefold echo with black king on three different squares mated from three directions, unfortunately twice by the same mating move.
