No.943 by Gani Ganapathi – Paralysing pieces in reciprocal under-promotions. (JV)
Definition:
Paralysing piece: Moves as normal but cannot capture; instead it paralyses any enemy unit it attacks, so that this unit is unable to move, capture or give check, until the attack from the paralyzing piece ceases. At the mate the side being mated must have at least one move available before the notional capture of the King.

If White takes a queen, it’s not mate: 4.Qb5/h5 or 4.Qe7 can be played. If Black takes a queen, it’s not selfmate (there are other choices to paralyse wK without unparalysing bK). Even if the bQ were to play to unparalyse the bK it still would not be mate due to the extra rule concerning mate, but that rule is not necessary for the soundness of this problem.
Not correct Stephen. If black were to unparalyse his king with a queen also (e.g. in the first solution by 2.pQe3) it would be mate because white’s paralysing rook or bishop has the free moves. So black has to underpromote so that he will have the only move (which will unparalyse his king) to paralyse the white king.
I am sorry, you are right because the white paralysing rook or bishop will also be paralysed and white will not have the free move!

Gani ! I love to be surprised ! I didn’t know the paralysing pieces. If I understood well, each time to parry the check,
black has to cover with a paralysing piece, but in both cases, it is black King which mates ! Well done, in a very economical maner. I like it !

The check by white is by the King to the paralysed black king. Black is forced to reply by by paralysing the white King. Because this move of black unparalyses his king, the paralysed white king is mated ! Well done Ganapathi! Dont know if more can be done with four pieces!!
