Protean Chess
Solution: (click to show/hide)
(C+ by Popeye 4.87)
64 variations to checkmate the white king
64 consecutive tasks, each multiple has a different solution game, and yet all multiples are connected by the
same basic idea. Both the white and black inventiveness
in the solution games is amazingly rich; there are also
conversions (even all-conversion), sacrifices, zugzwang, hiding moves, and board-dominating moves to
be seen. 1 piece alone can keep the king or a royal piece
under control in Protean Chess, both for white and
black, e.g. a king can even mate the other king (as a royal
piece) alone!
Amazing task. I have not seen the other parts. But I don’t see mate in Part -C. The royal WP can move to f8.
Protean pawns move in the direction of the captured pawn. I.e. white protean pawns move down.
Right Thomas, but this is Popeye interpretation…the opposite for WinChloe (Protean pawns move in the direction of the captured pawn, i.e. white protean pawns move up)
Hmm. Wasn’t the captured pawn black if the Protean pawn is white?
WinChloe gives ‘fairy condition not treated’ for Protean men.
but e.g. in v) (‘upwards’ means ‘towards the 8th rank’)
1.Sg6 Sxf4=PP+ 2.Kxf4=rP e6 3.Qe2+ Kxg6=rS#
1… Sxf4 results in a black pawn that moves upwards (because the captured piece, a white pawn, moves upwards), so it’s a black Protean pawn. 2. Kxf4 results in a royal pawn that moves upwards as well (because the captured piece is a black Protean pawn that moves upwards), so it’s a regular royal pawn.
So when capturing a white pawn, a black piece turns into a black Protean pawn, when capturing a white Protean pawn, a black piece turns into a regular black pawn.
