The reason is that Popeye only tests for checkmate when it is told to, most often to test find out whether the mate goal requested by the stipulation is reached.

Testing for mate in proof games would be a waste of time.

You’d only need to do the check when displaying the solution, don’t you?

Sometimes it’s crucial to know the full effect of a move. The legality of play might depend on ‘which side is in check’.

The LEGAL solution of b) should start with 1.Kg5+!!!

Or a simpler position which could be legal if the side having the move is in check:

Black Be7 Kg5
