red-roses2Happy Birthday to Seetharaman Kalyan! (birthday: 18.03.1949)
No.283 – Vlaicu Crișan – A surprising demonstration of Superguards condition dedicated to its inventor ! (JV)

No.283.1 – Vlaicu Crișan – Author writes that he’s found that No.283 has been cooked by Popeye 4.62. Now author presents the new version, C+ by Popeye 4.62 (testing time was about 19 hours!), one half-move less, but with two pairs of pieces mutually exchanging their roles! I share author’s hope that Mr.Seetharaman will still enjoy his birthday gift! (JV)

Definitions:

Superguards: Any piece (including Kings and pawns), which is observed by another piece of the same color cannot be captured. Pinned pieces also observe.

Lion(Li): Moves along Q-lines over another unit of either color to any square beyond that unit. A capture may be made on arrival, but the hurdle is not affected.

This is the first Superguards problem published using fairy pieces! And what a beauty it is!

Black has to move his Lion e5 and black knight away preventing them from the guarding the black king. In the meantime white has to remove the guards to d6/e3 opened by the Lion d5. And Vlaicu finds two beautiful routes for the black knight to f5. With dual avoidance play and nice orthogonal/diagonal echoes, this is a classic deserving careful study and I am sure will be quoted widely.

Thanks Vlaicu for the dedication – a wonderful birthday gift !

A very elegant strategy, which is difficult to achieve, is shown beautifully . In (a) the Lion e5 should move to e7 or e8 to finally guard e1 & e2 for mating WK. But why it should move only to e8 & not to e7 is subtle. If Lie5 moves to e7 then it superguards b4 & c5 for the BK to escape (which will also be realized only after WS moves to d6) and hence not to force mate for WK. An identical effect is shown in (b). The two different routes of BS from a3 to f5 are very nicely forced. Further, it can be noticed that 1.Sg4 in (a) and 1.Sf7 in (b) doesn’t work and the reason for this also is subtle. This is the best problem I have seen in Superguards. Probably it may be one of the rarest problems to be seen in future too.

It should be blessing in disguise that this beautiful problem was cooked. Now it is better with added exchange of functions between one more pair of pieces. I feel half move less is not much important.

Very happy that this pioneer problem could be saved. Thanks again Vlaicu! It is still beautiful.
