No.509 by Henryk Grudzi?ski – A problem by a noted Polish master of Retro and PG genre. An interesting position in PG13 created with Pawns only! (JV)

No.509.1 by Henryk Grudzi?ski – An improvement to No.509 after comment by Paul Rãican! (JV)

No.509.2 by Henryk Grudzi?ski – One more improvement to No.509! (JV)

No.509.3 by Henryk Grudzi?ski & Paul Rãican – One more version of the complicated idea shown in No.509. Nice to see the joint work! (JV)

No.509.4 by Henryk Grudzi?ski & Paul Rãican – Correction of No.509.3 after a cook was found by Nicolas Dupont! This problem involves more and more people! (JV)

No.509.5 by Henryk Grudzi?ski & Paul Rãican – One more improvement to the initial idea! Authors mention it is partly checked. (JV)

Definitions:

Take & Make: Having captured, a unit must immediately, as part of its move, play a non-capturing move in imitation of the captured unit from the capture-square. If no such move is available, the capture is illegal. Promotion by capture occurs only when a pawn arrives on the promotion rank as the result of a take&make move. Checks are as in normal chess: after the notional capture of the checked K, the checking unit does not move away from the King’s square.

Nice cooking line, Paul!

Indeed, a lot of captures in T&M is very dangerous, as this condition allow capturing pieces to reach several different squares during the second part of their moves.

For 509.1 I found hardly a cook: 1.Sf3 Sc6 2.Se5 Sd4 3.Sxd7-Sd5 Sxe2-Se3 4.Sxe7-Se6 Sxf1-Sb5 5.Sxf8-Se7 Qxd2-Qd3 6.Bh6 gxh6-c1=Q! 7.f4 Qxb1-Qc3+ 8.bxc3-e5 Qb3 9.axb3-d5 Bg4 10.Ra6 Bxd1-Bd2+ 11.Kxd2-c1 Kxe7-f5 12.Rg6 hxg6-a6 13.Re1 Rh3 14.gxh3-h6 Sf6 15.exf6-h7 Re8 16.Rxe8-Re6 a5 17.Rc6 bxc6-a6 18.d6.

509.2: Alternative game 1.e4 b5 2.Bc4 bxc4-f1=B! 3.Qe2 a6 4.Qxa6-a5 Bc4 5.d3 Rxa5-d5 6.Bh6 gxh6-c1=S! 7.Se2 Sxe2-g3 8.dxc4-e2 Sf1 9.exd5-d2 d5 10.Kxf1-f3. Sorry, Henryk.

The first black move is very dangerous as it is a waiting move. It seems one can play instead 1.e4 g5 2.Ba6 bxa6-f1=S and 7.Bf4 gxf4-c1=B

Maybe there is a chance for correctness with a visible black move on the diagram position, e.g. 1.e4 h5 2.Ba6 bxa6-f1=S, and same continuation than in the intended solution.

The version 509.4 is cooked too: 3. …Sf1-g3 4.Sg1-h3 a7-a6 5.Qe2xa6-a5 Sg3xh1-g1 6.d2-d3 Ra8xa5-f5 7.Bc1-h6 g7xh6-e3 8.f2xe3-e2 Sg1xh3-g5 9.e4xf5-f2 Sg5-e4 10.d3xe4-d2.
Must find something shorter….
