No.896 by Stephen Emmerson – Non-standard problem, 2 in 1, with paradoxical content and exotic pieces! I sincerely thank Stephen for the dedication! (JV)
Definitions:
Hurdle color changing hopper: Hopper that change color of its hurdle (excluding King) after move.
Grasshopper(G): Moves along Q-lines over another unit of either color to the square immediately beyond that unit. A capture may be made on arrival, but the hurdle is not affected.
Sparrow(SW): Moves like a Grasshopper ((0,1)+(1,1)Hopper , but deflects 135° either way on passing over the hurdle. The arrival square is adjacent to the hurdle.
Moose(M): Moves like a Grasshopper ((0,1)+(1,1)Hopper , but deflects 45° either way on passing over the hurdle. The arrival square is adjacent to the hurdle.
Eagle(EA): Moves like a Grasshopper ((0,1)+(1,1)Hopper), but deflects 90° either way on passing over the hurdle. The arrival square is adjacent to the hurdle.

A picture problem -“JV”!
To get 2 accurate h#4 sequences with ideal mates is amazing.
Usually, the content in picture problems is just so-so.
Fine achievement by Stephen!
Also interesting is that the py2web animation works, without disturbing the other half!
Black starts by changing one of the hoppers to W.
Then uses his 3 remaining moves to walk his K to the board edge.
W uses his 4 moves to change the colour of the other 3 hoppers… and mate!
In the final position, the mighty sparrow guards 3 squares, while the moose, eagle and grasshopper guard 1 each!

It is amazing, that the both “halves” of the problem don’t need to cross the “border-line” – the play in the both solutions takes exactly the half of the board! Animation py2web shows just what it sees in the solutions. It doesn’t know there’re two problems, it sees only one, with 8×8 board, with two solutions, and it doesn’t mind two Kings on the board. 🙂 I like how it looks!
Actually, in the “Left” solution, the Sparrow does cross the border (Black’s first move) and then re-crosses back (White’s third move). But, like I said, it doesn’t disturb anything, since the square e2 is empty!
Sorry! It’s the Moose which wanders off and returns, not the Sparrow!
I’ve just updated the presentation of this problem to a new one with Stephen’s help. I should say the program code Stephen has sent me to make it work impressed me even more than a problem itself. It is something to learn from..
