About the 17th T.T.of “Phenix”:
Very interesting tournament! In recent years, in my opinion, all the conditions of the “Breton Family” are among the most interesting new inventions in the fairy world! Congratulations to the organizers!
Meanwhile, I perceive the regulations in relation to “ Section A” in this way: only direct mats (#2-n) are allowed – without any additional fairy – conditions and fairy pieces. In other words, all other direct problems, as =2-n, R# 2-n or R=2, etc, can participate in the “Section B”. Is correct my interpretation?

Are the definitions really correct? “The choice of the eliminated piece is made by the captured camp” – in that case, the example problem by Loustau would have no solution as there would be no threat (after 2.Qxb3, the captured side [Black!] can choose to remove some other white P than Pc6. So I assume the choice of which piece to eliminate is made by the *capturing* side, and surely the same for all the other Breton variants.
Am I right?

The French announcement says that the choice is made by the capturing side, so it looks like a translation error. The definition given on Julia’s Fairies says that it is the capturing side (search for “Breton” and look at the definition attached to published Breton problems).

As an aside, I don’t think that Popeye and WinChloe support *any* condition where in the course of a move a choice is made by the opponent. They both offer Circe Couscous but not Circe Coucou, the counterpart where the choice of promotion is made by the opponent. A difference which looks simple in writing would actually be extremely hard to program.

Breton and its variants are now available in Jacobi v0.7.2, which should help those who are composing proof games. You should also read my Breton tip in the documentation, which can speed up solving for some PGs.

In Breton, a move like “hxSg8=S [-g8]” is legal in Popeye, but not in Winchloe! (Winchloe uses the piece type before promotion.) The tourney director told me that both interpretations are accepted in the TT, so in Jacobi I offer the “Py” option for those who would like to compose with Popeye rules.
