No.800 by Nikola Predrag – Albino theme, but with Pser-s# stipulation and Circe! (JV)

No.800.1 by Nikola Predrag – An improved version to No.800! (JV)

Definitions:

Circe: Captured units (not Ks) reappear on their game-array squares, of the same colour in the case of pieces, on the file of capture in the case of pawns, and on the promotion square of the file of capture in the case of fairy pieces. If the rebirth square is occupied the capture is normal.

Pser: This is the original definition by its inventor, Dan Meinking: A parry series-mover differs from a standard series-mover prior to the last move as follows:

  1. the series-side may give check during the series;
  2. when checked, the idle-side must immediately parry the threat;
  3. a parry-move may be helpful or defensive, depending on the problem-type (for example – in Pser-s# the parry-move is defensive);
  4. after a check-and-parry, the series-side continues the series.

Every Pser problem combines two stipulations:

Part 1 – Pser, which indicates the special series play with participation of both sides according to the author’s definition;

Part 2 – the kind of problem, according to well known stipulations, which can show direct play (n#, n=, s#, s= r#, r=, etc), help play (h#, h=, h==, etc) or mixed play (hs#, hs=, hs= =, etc).

(For more explanations about Pser see IGM Petko A. Petkov article “The Wonderful (new genre) Parry Series“)

It would be interesting to know Nikola’s views on the plus points of the improved version.

It’s not quite an improvement, since I’ve had both versions before sending the first one for publication. It was a matter of choice so, it’s more about a different viewpoints.

The first scheme for No.800.1 (with wSd2 and bPd6) didn’t require wBf8 but I couldn’t avoid the cooks. wBf8 is a rather expensive constructional tool to achieve the correctness.

Therefore I decided to increase the functions of wS and the formal aspect based on the musical terms, adding 2 moves of the “intermezzo”.
I was pleased with the applicability of the terms “exposition/variation/imitation/intermezzo/diminution” to the chess content of No.800.
And the white economy has determined my choice, at the time.

But it was not quite what I had originally intended, and No.800.1 presents the whole idea, despite the unpleasant wB.
Albino is not the theme here, I wished to present it as a “known” tool for achieving some original thematic idea.
wP is 3 times sacrificed on the same square to force Black to sacrifice his 3 thematic pieces which will guard 3 wK’s flights in the end.

The thematic intensity of No.800.1 is essential and thus, a “partial compensation/explanation” for wBf8.
bPb5 in No.800 is not thematic for a final flightguard, it is thematic only as related to Albino.
And that has betrayed my original intention.

The analogy with music is interesting..
I’ve seen analogies with food: “appetiser”, “opening course”, “main course”, “dessert”, “cherry on top”.. 🙂
