57th WCCC: Bon voyage & good luck!

wccc-bern2014The 57th World Congress of Chess Composition starts today! I wish a nice trip and an excellent time in Bern to all participants! And good luck to everybody in composing tournaments!

These days I also need to finish some of my problems for fairy tournaments, so I’d like to ask you to allow me some delay in publication of any materials on JF. The same time I’m inviting you to write here about any news from the Congress, and to post (or to send me for publication) any photos as well! – Julia.

Py2Web by Dmitri Turevski

Py2Web

A great tool for webmasters and sites’ visitors by Dmitri Turevski

Py2Web is an utility for people who create webpages. It allows embedding chess problems viewer into the webpages in a way similar to that in which the PGN viewers work. The difference is that Py2Web supports many features that PGN viewers don’t, e.g.: idling (set-play, threat, series-movers), twins, fairy pieces, fairy effects (rebirth, piece color change etc).” (DT)

The Problemist: judge of Fairy section

jv-may2014The Problemist: my appointment as a judge of Fairy section 2014

Dear Friends,

I did not want to but Peter Harris has written to me as follows:

“I was so pleased to learn about your appointment as Fairies Judge for 2014 for The Problemist. You simply must put the news on JF – and not be bashful. Readers would like to know.”

Well I am following this advice! I would of course also like you to send problems to The Problemist Fairy editor Stephen.emmerson@ntlworld.com. Thank you! – Julia

Uri Avner (13-01-1941 – 10-06-2014)

UriAvner

Uri Avner (13-01-1941 – 10-06-2014)

GM Uri Avner passed away on the 10th of June, 2014, at the age of 73, after a long battle with a severe disease. His funeral will take place on June, 12th.

Uri was born on January 13, 1941 and was a clinical psychologist in profession. He started composing at an early age (in the last issue of Variantim,  is quoted a problem he composed when he was 13!!) and for many years was at the center of Israeli Chess Problem composition. He organized in Israel three congresses and edited initially HAPROBLEMAI and its successor, Variantim, until just 3 years ago. He edited and published several books and booklets.  For many years he led the Israeli chess composition society, represented Israel in the WCCC and was certainly the best Israeli composer ever. Uri was always involved in various sub-committees and was the President of the PCCC from 2006 to 2010 during its transition to WFCC.  Uri’s contribution to international chess composition was immense: he was involved in WCCT, FIDE Albums, solving events and almost in every aspect of our art. JF website expresses deep condolences to Uri’s family, relatives, friends.
